Episode #150 – PK’s Cult Of Personality

This week’s cold open is an iTunes review from Brian McGee of Fargo, ND. We loved it so much, we had to open the show with it.

The Stanley Cup Final is here! Nashville vs Pittsburgh Game 1 begins in the midsts of this week’s podcast with Ryan, Geeta and our black ace Stu Walters of TSN 1040. We gather this week to talk all about the yellow Final of 2017.

They give their Stanley Cup predictions and discuss the storylines going into the Final. From Nashville’s defence and rock solid goaltending, to those two guys in Pittsburgh with the big numbers who appear to be amazing at hockey.

They discuss PK Subban’s recent media spotlight, John Scott’s comments and share their thoughts on the Montreal/Nashville trade and how and why Montreal made the deal. Maybe PK’s personality didn’t jive with the Montreal core and dressing room. It appears to be doing great things in Nashville… the same maybe cannot be said for Shea Weber.

Finally, the gang discusses the Vancouver Canucks recent signing of Philip Holm out of the IIHF World Championships. He played on the gold medal winning Team Sweden and was the one defensemen without NHL rights. Canucks fans see this as a total win for the team as they’re able to land a sought after prospect.

Episode #149 – Ottawa Snoozefest

Ryan, Geeta and Black Ace Cole join you this week to discuss the ups and downs of the Eastern Conference Championship. From Guy Boucher’s unconventional tactics pulling his goalies, Marc-Andre Fleury losing his net to Matt Murray… again and quite possibly for a final time as the expansion draft looms.

They discuss the dull trap played by the Ottawa Senators and how affective it has been through two and a half rounds of the playoffs… but then the Penguins appeared to have awoken.

They also discuss throwing items on the ice. From octopi, to catfish, mallards and BC Salmons, there’s a tradition of playoff tomfoolery. They also discuss the uproar caused by Vancouver bar ‘The Pint’ offering free wings to people in Edmonton Oilers jerseys during their playoff run earlier this month.

They’re also discussing how quiet it is on the Canucks from. With the rookies in town training with Canucks coaches and a month until we learn who’s been exposed in the Vegas expansion draft, it is a dull time for Canuck fans. But they discuss the positives of the Larscheiders, the Vancouver Canucks supporters section that debuted earlier in the season at Rogers Arena and the positives they bring to the fanbase during a darker time.

Finally, they discuss Ryan Getzlaf’s $10,000 fine for use of a homophobic slur to an NHL referee. They discuss the magnitude of the word and what the penalty means for the league going forward.

Episode #148 -Same Ol’ Capitals Situation

There are no former NHL’ers on the show this week, we’re back to regularly scheduled programming. But it’s a full bench this week, and the the gang has a lot of fun!

Ryan, Dave, P Mac and Geeta gather at her palatial estate this week as Game 2 of the Penguins/Senators series wraps up. They discuss Marc-Andre Fleury’s resurgence, the chances of him heading to Vegas and what this latest playoff run does for his legacy.

They also discuss the same thing we see every year, the Washington Capitals being bounced in the second round. Do you trade one of the big two? Add in some new support cast characters? Maybe a new coach? Three Presidents Trophies, four head coaches and no third round appearance. What would YOU do?

Jake Virtanen is playing inline hockey for Team Canada, Travis Green is the head coach and Jim Benning’s new lust for “North American Heart”. They catch up on the Vancouver Canucks’ offseason.

Finally, the gang opens a great gift from loyal listener Jyrki21 and discuss the Seattle Thunderbirds’ first WHL Championship and Ryan’s scouting report on NY Islanders first round prospect Mathew Barzal!

Episode #147 – Kirk McLean’s Two Pad Stack

IMG_6409-1

Captain Kirk is on the podcast this week! He joins Ryan, Geeta and P Mac to talk about his impressive NHL career. He’s a solid replacement for Dave, who was out playing his beer league championship game the night we recorded.

Kirk discusses the tough season in which he was traded from Vancouver to Carolina…and then to Florida. The difference in the hockey markets. Going from a rabid Canadian market to the Carolinas and eventually to the sun belt, we ask what kind of toll that takes on a professional hockey player.

IMG_6414

They discuss the difference in coaching styles between Pat Quinn and Iron Mike Keenan in the unfortunate 1997/98 Vancouver Canucks season and eventually, the positives that came out of playing for the New York Rangers to end out his career.

mclean_mask_12

They ask if there were any hard feelings from the 1994 Stanley Cup run that resurfaced when Mark Messier, Iron Mike or the rest of the New York Rangers resurfaced later in his career.

Finally, they discuss the positive impact of Pat Quinn on that early 90’s Canucks team, discuss Jake Allen’s struggles with St. Louis this season and the dynamic of the dressing room at the time. From the leaders of the team, to which Courtnall brother was the biggest prankster on the team.

Episode #145 – Jack Eichel Throwing Batteries

The second round is here, the Senators are sticking around and Jack Eichel felt like he wanted a new head coach, so he got one!

Ryan, Dave and Geeta gather this week to discuss the interesting decision to fire Sabres GM Tim Murray and head coach ‘Disco’ Dan Bylsma after comments made regarding Jack Eichel’s future in Buffalo as well as negative comments from Ryan O’Reilly.

They also discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs falling in six games to the Washington Capitals in a series that was much closer than it should have been. The Ottawa Senators however took care of the Boston Bruins in six games, and Dave has some scathing comments for their less than classy fan base following the loss. The latest instalment of sore wining by the Bean Town faithful.

Finally, they give their second round picks, Ryan gives a bold prediction of a future Colorado/Chicago trade. Being swept in the first round leads to some rash decisions!

Episode #144 – Dart Guy & The Curse of Brooks Laich

“Aren’t they supposed to be good?” The common question hockey fans are asking themselves watching the first few games of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Ryan, Dave and Geeta join you this week to discuss Zack Kassian’s resurgence in Edmonton. Playing like his boyhood idol, Todd Bertuzzi, he is finally making the impact everyone believed he had the potential for. But a rough time in Vancouver and Montreal caused a bit of a derail of those plans and aspirations.

They also discuss the problems the Washington Capitals are facing taking on the red hot, young as hell Toronto Maple Leafs and maybe that Brooks Laich trade last season caused some bad karma for the Capitals.

They talk about the problems in Chiacgo right now and Dave discusses the problems facing good guy “players’ coaches” in the playoffs. Guys like Bruce Boudreau, AV and Gully, while the angry snap shows are showing success!

Finally, the gang discusses Dart Guy, all things Maple Leafs and the fantastic success in Pittsburgh and their tremendous NCAA scouting.

Episode #143 – Fired Willie À La Mode

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are here! Your favourite NHL team is either in them, or they’re firing their coaching staff!

A full bench joins you this week to discuss the big firing in Vancouver. After a three year stint and a losing record with the Canucks, Willie Desjardins was fired Monday morning. If you’ve listened to this podcast for a little while, you knew the frustration with the Climax Saskatchewan native’s decisions behind the bench and when constructing his lines. Who will replace him? Will it be Comets head coach Travis Green? or a grizzled vet that is unemployed right now?

They also discuss the Los Angeles Kings cleaning house and firing Dean Lombardi as GM and Darryl Sutter as head coach. Two Stanley Cups weren’t good enough to save their jobs and they’re on the open market… Vegas?

They look towards the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, giving their thoughts and predictions for each series and a couple key players and storylines to watch out for!

They also answer a couple Canucks questions from listeners and give some predictions for the off season to come!

Episode #142 – Matthew Tkachuk’s Wartime Efforts

Matthew Tkachuk’s ruffling feathers, Willie D is criticising Goldobin’s grit and Uncle Gary is playing hardball with the IOC!

A full bench joins you this week after a hiatus due to trips to Fiji and or the interior of British Columbia. Ryan shares some stories of the road and the gang discusses the Canucks’ lost season’s final few games.

They discuss the saga of Matthew Tkachuk. Going against the grain as a rookie, he is upsetting a lot of the veteran players for running his mouth, playing a hard yet so far honest game and going after Drew Doughty. The gang is also gearing up for a potential Battle of Alberta first round series and getting very excited!

They touch on the incredibly exciting Toronto Maple Leafs and how each game they play seems to be must see TV. Will they last in the playoffs? Can the young as hell squad be able to nail down a 60 minute effort? Or will they become a team of next year or the year after?

Eddie Lack’s scare vs Detroit comes up. Ryan, Geeta, Dave and P Mac are all relieved he is okay and discuss the possibilities of him returning to Vancouver next season.

Finally, the gang rants on the NHL’s decision to not go to the 2018 Winter Olympics. Is this a done deal? or the latest in a long, drawn out game of chicken?  They also discuss the best bar toilets in Vancouver. The answers will surprise you!
